I remember stands of his hair sticking to his forehead the night of his championship game. How he got the touchdown and picked me up and swirled me around. I still hear the cheering of the crowd and his sweaty jersey drenching my tank top. His lips were pressed into mine for a quick second before he had to leave. But when we got to his house, its like his lips were molded onto my body. That night was possibly the best night of my life.
Then he left.
Two years together and then.. That. How he hung up after apologizing. How much I cried that night, and God knows how long after. How his voice didn't crack a bit, not like he was sad at all. I heard his friends laughing in the background. I was himulated. He promised me forever, but what guy doesn't? 5 months later, I'm partly over the douchebag that stomped on my heart. My best guy friend has been there since then. Nick, is his name. Secretly, I'm crazy about him. But that would just ruin our friendship. Its just.. Everything about him makes me forget my past, the future, and the world just stops when I look at him. Why would I tell him that?
Right, I wouldn't.
I doodle hearts in my binder as I sit in class, waiting for the bell. "Hey, best friend." I hear the familiar voice that calmed me down that night. He still wears the cologne I was lost in when he hugged me for hours. I smile at him and he leans down, handing me a card. "Happy friendaversary." He says to me, flashing me a smirk. I grin and open the card, reading the scribbled letters.
"Hi dork, its our friendaversary and yes, we've been through so much since 7th grade. 5 years feels like a life time. I'm still gonna beat his ass, alright. Even if you think I'm 'weak'. You're beautiful, you know that? I stare at you all the time, and your laugh. Its such a good sound to encounter when you rarely hear it. Your smile? Like a rainbow on your mouth. Cheesy, I know.. But I guess it all boils down to one thing. Ever since the night Joe fucked up, I keep noticing how I feel about you more every day. I knew I had a crush on you, but who wouldn't? You're truly the most gorgeous, smart, funny, talented girl I've ever met. I love you."
I turn around with my jaw hung open. Is this happening? I check Nick's seat and he's not there. I sigh and close the card, noticing the note on the back. "Meet me in the back." I look up at the clock, estimating how much time I had to see him. But at this point I dont care if I was tardy.. Or counted absent for all I care. I rush out of the class and run to the backdoors, opening them widely. Nick was sitting on the ground with a red rose, legs crossed. I smile down at him widely, thinking the compliment he gave me. I wrap my arms around his neck, tackling him on the ground. "I love you too." I mumble as I pull away, sitting on his waist. He raises his eyebrow and hands me the rose.
"Hi, girlfriend."
