While mixing saltwater for my aquarium, I added the standard 2 1/2 cups of salt to a 5gal bucket of water. Instead of the 35 PPT (sg = 1.023) that I expected, I found that I had about 68 PPT. Almost double the desired salt content - a fatal concentration.

What happened? We know we must always calibrate instruments like refractometers - but have you ever heard of calibrating a measuring cup from your kitchen?

No wonder some of my recipes have been screwy lately. This is insane.

  • Damn. The compression destroyed the markings on the white cups. You'll have to take my word for it - the large white cup on the left is 1 cup, and the small white cup is 1/2
