A Grader whose blade was guided by input from a Robotic Total Station at CAT Grade Control, Automation and GPS Demonstration Days in Syracuse, NY. The Grader was driven by the operator, but the blade was completely controlled by input from a Robotic Total Station situated nearby.
Paul Smith's College Surveying and Mapping Club was invited to attend this event by Mr. Dates of Dates Excavating. Thanks to him, we had a fun filled day at the demonstration and may have helped negotiate a equipment deal for the school with Trimble.

@ganeshspice It's a robotic total station.
In this situation it is locked onto a target on the motor grader and talks via a radio link to accurately tell the computer in the grader the location of its cutting edge. The grader operator can switch on an automatic valve system and the computer will adjust the blade as he drives to get an accurate cut. Tolerance with this system is generally within 5mm at ranges up to 150meters.

Trimble is currently the only manufacturer to offer active targets for their machine control solutions. You can learn about active versus passive targets in the Learning Center on The Kellogg Report website.
Additionally, you can compare CATs AccuGrade system in detail to competing systems from Leica and Topcon.
