I think it's important to consider that whatever he said or wrote at the time is overshadowed by a fact he's admitted in later years, which is that he was out to offend everybody. He often wrote songs from the perspective of a made-up character, not his own, and just wanted to piss off as many people as possible. Which, considering the arguments in the comments, he has certainly succeeded in doing.

The year is WAY off on this song! First full length album . . . Only a Lad . . . 1980 . . . this song is on that album. AWESOME band and album and song!

I laughed when I found out that this was on the list of 50 great conservative songs. Though by reading the lyrics only this is true, the vocals are sung in satire showing how annoying conservatives are, even if they may have a point. Danny himself even claimed it was a satire in an interview. In truth this song shows the bad points of both the left and right wings and how silly politics are.
