i made this with a small bit of wood and i have drilled 3 holes in to it iv only set up one of them and iv put lead from a pencil throught it and as you can see it take a long time to set off the powder im not sure if its the battery as the flashpowder is set of very easy any one got any idea ?

  • Flash powder is sensitive to shock, friction etc but is quite hard to light, think it needs to reach 400-600 degrees depending on the type of it, but once lit it reaches well in excess of 2000 degrees so the flame spreads really quickly.

    It will light with visco, blackmatch and other 'sparky' fuses, but will not light instantly even with a candle flame (assuming you're using pot.perchlorate / dark flake 70:30 mix). Other flashes such as chlorate are far easier to ignite but more sensitive.

  • yeh it lights up with a flame from lighter straight away its KClO4, MgAl 50/50 and yeh i think the lead takes ages to heat up and needs alot of heat to set it off thanks for the info
