My reaction to this song is intense. This song is brilliant. What a gifted writer Knopfler is (and singer, and guitarist). Reading the lyrics, he makes it seem easy to storytell such raw, painful feelings, intimately - nothing smarmy or sappy, no cliche, no caricatures. Hurtful moments captured and painted so clearly that I can imagine just how painful divorce must be. He remembers it for us. A cautionary tale.
