Mark Knopfler - A Place Where We Used To Live

Lyrics:

This empty kitchen's where
I'd while away the hours
Just next to my old chair
You'd usually have some flowers
The shelves of books
Even the picture hooks
Everything is gone
But my heart is hanging on

If this old neighbourhood
Survived us both alright
Don't know that it withstood
All the things that took our light
You on the stair
I can see you there
Everything is gone
But my heart is hanging on

Once there was a little girl
Used to wonder what she would be
Went out into the big wide world
Now she's just a memory
There used to be a little school here
Where I learned to write my name
But time has been a little cruel here
Time has no shame

It's just a place where
We used to live
It's just a place where
We used to live

Now in another town
You lead another life
And now upstairs and down
You're someone else's wife
Here in the dust
There's not a trace of us
Everything is gone
But my heart is hanging on

It's just a place where
We used to live
It's just a place where
We used to live

  • One of the greatest songs written (for me). it's like MK knows my soul.

  • How does he do it??? One incredible song after another for three decades!!! I'm serious, I do not think he's human!

  • This year, I moved to an apartement with my girlfriend I had for 3 years. She completely changed and left me for a random guy after half a year and now I have to live there alone. This song nails it completely. Somehow I don't feel so alone in that apartement when I listen to this. It feels like someone understands.

  • @vulkanizer Oh boy, is that not true! If there is one person on this earth that I would like to meet, it's Mr. MK. This guy can write songs about most anything, and I have a whole volume of stuff I wish I could tell him/show him, and let him create away his magic songs. Most of what was in this song encapsulates what I feel, but I have other stuff that I wish Mr. K knew about to create his music.

  • The best songs combine words, music and voice. Mark Knopfler has created one of the most beautiful and haunting songs because he understands all 3 concepts. If you listened to the song in a foreign language you could discern the meaning from his voice. If you just read the words you can feel the pain of lost love. Or if you listen to the music the mood is clear.

This song has become my favorite amongst the treasure of Mark Knopfler's songbook. He is consistently great, & this song is best

  • She left Mark for another life in another town? How sad ......

  • He let her go, now she's someone else's wife,... don´t cry man...don´t cry

  • @GeorgeTel100 it's taken from true emotion, real life emotion, since no human being is alone, his feelings are bound to echo with many others' feelings, you andf I are just lucky enough that they be our emotions

  • "And now upstairs and down, you're someone else's wife..." Who doesn't identify with this verse? Who doesn't have an old, forgotten love lost over the years?

  • @danieleshapiro I think you're more right than I am :) All the best!

  • @GeorgeTel100 MK never ceases to amaze me too. I think he is human - kind of superhuman maybe. Cheers!

  • @lalin59 Thanks for the response.
