Kiki Trick Preview Video English Subtitles

The following is a subtitled version of an interview/preview conducted by Nintendo president Satoru Iwata and longtime game designer Yoshio Sakamoto of Metroid, Rhythm Heaven, and Warioware fame for the recently announced Wii game Kiki Trick. Kiki Trick itself is a game that's made to test your listening comprehension in a variety ways, such as presenting conflicting on-screen information and even outright distorting dialog. The objective, naturally, is to figure out what's actually going on with the audio and figure out the right answer in a variety of minigames not unlike some of Sakamoto's and SD1's previous efforts.

While the overall premise of Kiki Trick is universal enough, in execution, the game is so steeped in how the Japanese language operates right down to the very title that its localization prospects are probably minuscule. At the very least, if someone ever actually attempts to translate it, they're going to have to probably retool a lot of fundamental aspects based on the footage released so far. Nevertheless, I decided to translate this video to give non-Japanese speakers a taste at how the game operates and hopefully some understanding of how it even works in the original Japanese. I like to use my translation skills to bring attention to interesting Japanese games in general and that's especially the case when it's a game like this that's all but guaranteed to remain solely in Japan.
