JOHANN SEBASTIAN BACH (1685-1750)

Concerto for two harpsichords in C major BWV1061a

2. Adagio ovvero Largo

3. Fuga

Performed by Christopher Hogwood
Christophe Rousset, harpsichords

*The "concerto a due cembalo" was composed buring the Leipzig years, circa 1732. It exists in two versions, one with just the two harpsichords, and a (later?) version with an added accompaniment for strings in the first and last movements. Of all the Bach harpsichord concertos, this is the only one that appears to be originally concieved for the instrument; the strings parts contribute so little they could well have been added by one of the sons in order to present the piece at the Collegium Musicum's Friday concerts. The keyboard writing, on the other hand, is a model of balance between the warring elements of four-hand writing - competition and collaboration. The string parts added to the final fugue show the impossiblity of this being any other than keyboard writing at its most idiomatic.

  • THANK YOU!

  • Curious, Hogwood always play J. S. Bach mechanically (with harpsichord). I like his interpretation.

  • The second part is, to me, played to mechanically, maybe too metronomically...I feel it more emotionally, esp. certain passages....but as an artist you can express your emotions as u wish.

  • very lovely piece

  • Nice two videos. Thanks for uploading!
