This is my new Union Pacific 4-6-0 Freight Starter Set by MTH, from their 2010 catalog. The engine and cars fall under MTH's Railking Rugged Rails product line. I figure these sets are real steals at under $300. You get a fantastic engine, some well done O-27 cars and a multi-function proto sound controller + constant-voltage power supply. I really wish Lionel would offer a comparably simplified and inexpensive Legacy controller. The set also comes with a loop of MTH's Realtrax, which I'll be trading for Fastrack on eBay since that's what I already have. I bought this set online from T and K Hobby.

When I ordered this engine, I was unsure if I'd be keeping it or re-selling it, but now I'm in love! Next up, I'm thinking some kind of Rail King Scale diesel.

  • I agree, you do get a lot more fun for your money with MTH...thanks for sharing

  • @4449spdaylight What's your problem can't he be impressed by his train he spent good money on?

  • When it comes to starter sets there is no question that MTH is the best in quality, detail and value! But when it comes to the high end sets in my opinion Lionel is superior. Not so much in reliability, but in slow speed operation, steam effects ( whistle, blow down, cylinder, etc.), swinging bells, sound quality, etc. Anyways that is my opinion and you certainly may disagree! Thanks for the video and have a great one!

  • 1: THAT'S NOT A TEN WHEELER MY ENGINE IS A TEN WHEELER

2: LIGHTEN UP YOU ARE NOT A FREAKIN SPOKES PERSON

3:ITS A STARTER SET SO COME DOWN ITS NOT LIKE YOU GOT A PREMIERE ENGINE

  • very nice steam locomotive

  • Thats because in the way of quality for price MTH is the best company on earth

  • I THINK MTH IS NICE FOR THE BUCK AND IN DEED COME WITH A NICE REALISTSTIC SMOKE UNIT AND HAS GREAT SOUNDS I HAVE GOTTEN A BRAND NEW MTH N&W 4-8-4 J CLASS #611 PASSENGER SET FROM 2008 AND I WAS A LITTLE DISSAPOINTED IN THE CATALOG IT SHOWS THAT IT HAS CHROME RIMED DRIVE WHEELS AND WHEN I GOT THE SET THAY WERE ALL BLACK AND THAT WAS THE MAIN REASON THAT I WAS SOLD TO BUY A MTH SET OTHER THEN IT BEING MORE THEN LESS THEN HALF THE PRICE OF LIONEL #611 SET BUT OTHER THEN THAT THE SET WAS OK

  • Hi, great review...and so to agree with you regarding MTH starter set, I'm amaze by what MTH is offering at their basic level....in case you interested in modern consist, the Amtrak Amfleet 2010 set is great and the engine is scale size, the car shorter but still look great and run amazing....and that little DCS remote is awesome...wish Lionel will come up with something like that....maybe for 2011 will consider one of these steamer....waiting for the new catalog....

  • hey if you are interested in model traIns and real steam locomotives check out my channel Im a railfan and I got vids that will intrest any kind of modeler or railroader I also have videos of my MTH layout

  • What a train! Gee... This makes me wish I could be a train conductor. I wish I could wear one of those conductor's hats and toot the whistle. I like trains because they're slow. It gives ya time to think, unlike every other thing these days... God. And trains remind me of industry... Big industry. They're part of something bigger! God, that slick metal siding... Like a big bullet in perpetual slow motion! Nothin' like a train.
