This is part one of a three part presentation "Amsterdam (c. 1940) and the Generation of Etty Hillesum" by Leonie Snatager Penney, a contemporary of Etty Hillesum. The presentation was given at the United States Holocaust Museum on May 18, 1995.

Esther (Etty) Hillesum (b. January 15, 1914 in Middelburg, The Netherlands, d. November 30, 1943 in Auschwitz, Poland) was a young Jewish thinker, mystic and writer whose letters and diaries describe life under Nazi rule in Amsterdam during the German occupation of World War II. Her writings were published in The Netherlands in 1981, and translated into English in 1983.

Leonie Snatager Penney and Etty Hillesum were contemporaries and friends. In her presentation, Leonie Snatager Penney describes the culture of pre-war, 1930s Amsterdam. Please note that this video was created from the best elements available... which is unfortunately a damaged videotape. Its historical value far outweighs any technical deficiencies.
