In 1992 the DSM Project was formed to organize efforts to modify the language of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (referred to as DSM). This is the book which psychotherapeutic professional usually refer to when seeking guidance in diagnosing mental illness. Until now, the DSM has considered sexual sadism and sexual masochism and fetishism to always be mental illnesses without allowing for the possibility that these modes of sexual expression can be non pathological.
