"Blow out the candles, Nikki!" Joe said sweetly as he helped his daughter blow out all 5 candles, one at a time. "Yay!" Joe clapped as he picked up Nicole and spun her around in his arms.
"Happy Birthday, Nikki!" Selena and Nick both cheered as they came over and kissed her cheeks. "How's Aunt Selly's favorite niece?" Selena said in a baby voice, gently pinching Nicole's cheeks.
"Sel, she's your only niece," Nick said, pointing out the obvious. "Do you want me to kick you in the nuts AGAIN?" Selena smirked, taking Nicole from Joe and walking her over to the baby pool, splashing around with her.
Joe smiled as he looked around. It was Nicole's 5th birthday party, and Joe's parents, brother Nick, sister-in-law Selena, and Demi's parents managed to come. Where was Demi? In LA, making a name for herself while Joe stayed in Washington, raising their baby girl.
"Dude, a letter came in the mail for you," Nick said, handing the pink envelope to Joe. "It's from Demi." Joe nodded, sighing as he ripped open the flap, revealing a birthday card and $500 cash inside. On everyone of Nicole's birthdays Demi would send a card and money, reminding Joe that not only did she know when her daughter's birthday was, but that she was following the divorce decree.
As much as Joe hated it, his AT&T paycheck wasn't exactly paying the bills, so he stuffed the cash in his pocket and threw the card in the trash. I mean, it was useless anyways, right?

Dear Joe,
I quit my job, and I'm coming home.
Tell our little angel happy birthday for me, OK?
