Although inspired by the death of a friend in Iraq, the song "Red, White and Brave" is not intended as a comment on the Iraq war either pro or con. It is meant as a salute to a special breed of people, all the men and women who have served America in uniform over all time.
The friend was Army Sgt.Cari Anne Gasiewicz, a graduate of the Defense Language Institute in Monterey, California, whose dedication and spirit was typical of so many who have graced the military. Asked how she felt about the prospect of going to Iraq, with all the danger that portended, she said she was honored to have the privilege of serving her country.
Her sacrifice, and that of others over the years, is a reminder that while we go about our daily lives, enjoying the blessings that our freedoms bestow, there are people willing to put their lives on the line in defense of those freedoms. "Red, White and Brave," in its own small way, is a thank you to these brave men and women and an appeal to everyone in civilian life to appreciate what they do for us and never to take them for granted.
Soldiers deserve the greatest respect from their fellow citizens. They go to work every day risking their lives to uphold the society in which they live.
