The most famous Ottoman Empire mosque, with six minarets and multiple domes, striking on the interior and exterior. Blue tiles, seen in this clip, led to the nickname.

This clip is a segment from "What the Sultan Saw", highlighting the history of Turkey & Constantinople/Istanbul, featuring the Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman Empires. This free Intrepid Berkeley Explorer video tour of western and central Turkey stars the Blue Mosque, Topkapi Palace, Cappadocia (land of scenic fairy chimneys), Ephesus (& other Roman cities), the Turkish Riviera, Turkish folk dancing and belly dancing, shopping for the magic flying carpet, and much more.

  • If you like this sample clip, please watch my longer free video of Turkey, "What the Sultan Saw". You need a broadband connection. Ask a search engine for: Intrepid Berkeley Explorer.

  • we should not use the word mosque we should say masjid! Mosque is a word the crusaders gave the muslims, its short for mosquito, basically means something which is dirty, because mosquitos are always dwelling in dirty smelly surroundings breeding! so we shud say masjid peace brother

  • I was unaware of this historic claim regarding

origin of the word "mosque". Even if correct,

in modern English I believe "mosque" is purely descriptive, with no stigma of any kind. "Masjid" is the Arabic term, a word unknown to most English speakers. Having used "mosque", with no disrespect intended,

so often in my videos, I feel that remains acceptable.

  • is this the haiga sophia?

  • No. That is nearby the Blue Mosque and far older. It was once the world's greatest Christian church during Roman/Byzantine Empire times, in the city of Constantinople, and known as Sancta Sophia.

When the Ottoman Empire conquered in 1453, the church was converted into a mosque (Haiga Sophia) and the city renamed as well, becoming Istanbul. The building is now a museum, displaying the history of both faiths. It appears early in my video of Turkey, "What the Sultan Saw".
