Bobby and Steve's Auto World Youth Foundation presented a check to the city of Columbia Heights during Monday's council meeting. The foundation, which is a collective effort of the eight Bobby and Steve's Auto World locations, hosted its annual charity golf tournament this summer and raised $53,000. With help from local businesses, $38,000 is going toward new playground equipment at Huset Park in Columbia Heights. The old playground equipment at Huset was removed in 2004 because it was outdated and was starting to become unsafe. Next, the Youth Foundation plans to raise funds to renovate the Castle Heights Playground, which is located between Columbia Heights High School and Highland Elementary. About 18 years ago volunteers raised funds and in five days installed the Castle Heights Playground, which is now in need of repair. M&I Bank is collecting unwanted cell phones in an effort to "go green" and dispose old technology in an environmentally friendly manner. Old cell phones can be dropped off at any of M&I Bank's Twin Cities locations, including in Blaine at 1520 109th Ave. N.E., through Dec. 12. Chargers, cords and other accessories may also be accepted. To further promote going "green," cell phones will be recycled by Waste Management, and proceeds will be donated to Great River Greening, to plant trees in spring 2010. Here's the best - or most tasty - part of the deal. In exchange for dropping off old cell phones, Chipotle will donate a free Chipotle burrito coupon to program participants, while supplies last. For more information on the cell phone recycling program visit mibank.com/recycle.
