I have posted a companion score and midi file on my website, www.7notemode.com This is a streamilined version to share some of the voicings I'm using. I also included a basic bass line as an example of how to get started doing a walking bass. I have had a lot of requests for teaching material, so this a bit of an experiment for me to see how much interest there is.

This tune is from the 1945 film "Anchors Aweigh", and was a standard played by Miles Davis and Bill Evans. The Miles Davis recordings of it are amazing. I took a fairly standard approach to it, using some chord substitutions, but I didn't go that far out. This is an unusual structure because it is only 16 measures long, and plays in a repeating AB pattern. Something about the changes makes me want to go over and over it. It's very circular. I never get tired of playing it. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did playing it.

  • Your rendition of this piece is stunning - I have never heard it played so beautifully. I also liked the overhead view of the piano keyboard. May I ask what the purpose of your earphone was? Greetings from Scotland!

  • Thanks ArchieWW. I was just monitoring the recording through in ear phones.

  • I play jazz piano and have just got a music degree, and have never heard anyone play this song so beautifully. You are a joy to listen to.x.

  • Thank you joeylovespizza. I really appreciate your comment.

  • I might be mistaken, but I think you have the influence of Bill, especially when you play ballads, I mean, the inner voices and the left hand in a very busy manner. anyway, it is really fine.

  • I've listened to a lot of Bill Evans. He really speaks to me.
