During a very long period while engineers tried to create stability for the tower, it was closed. I was able to climb the tower in 1986, but not subsequently in 1994 and 2001. Now I believe it is open once again.

Everything went wrong centuries ago, as the tower started to lean while under construction, one huge accident, blamed on shifting soil. And the lean kept increasing, until a recent engineering project placed counterweights at the base to secure the tower. Pisa would never have become such a tourist attraction had the tower been normal.
