How did they get away with saying that on network TV in the early Seventies? Did ABC just have less-easily-offended censors than CBS or NBC?

You can say "ass" on television, as you technically could be talking about a donkey.

Judging by your username, you're from Jersey. I remember back in the 80s, when Channel 11 was showing the reruns, the first time I saw this episode, they censored "ass." However, in further reruns of this ep, it was left intact.
