Introduction to the song Jakhon Esechhile by Sharmila Roy Pommot

'Jokhon Esechile Andhokare' belongs to the category of 'Prem' (love) in Gitabitan. Like many other songs of this genre, it has also a spiritual and philosophical depth descriptive of 'Divine Love'. It was written on January 1st, 1924 at the Kuthibari; the house in Sriniketan amidst green fields and an open sky that Rabindranath appreciated so much as his solitary refuge, far from his multifarious duties at Santiniketan. Satyajit Ray, an eminent film-maker and an ex-student of Santiniketan once pointed that almost all of Tagore's songs have a dramatic quality. There are layers of experiences reaching to a climax, all with a thematic as well as structural simplicity. This observation is highly justified in this song.

Musically, Rabindranath introduces the flat note of GA or komal gandhar which enhances the haunting tone and a brooding pathos around the line 'When you
came...'. Rabindranath included this song when he wrote Shapmochan in 1931; a descriptive prose with songs and dances, inspired by a Buddhist story.
