@atfatw of course you think that because you thought that you do zazen a couple of times and your worries, sorrows wil go away and you'll live happily ever after! you really need to do zazen to know what its like! by all means you should do physical exercise to train your body and zazen to train your mind. the samurai both meditated and practiced martial arts daily. start meditatin 5 mintues a day then a week later 10 then 20 etc. believe me once you'll never quit

@hekoka way too much hard and difficult work for inconstant unreliable results again physical exercise is the best way to go
-
@atfatw why is it that so many people would rather play xbox then solve math equations! because zazen is difficult. it is about training your mind which evidently is beyond comparison in terms of difficulty compared to pressups and chinups. you have to meditate yourself for a while and keep at it to feel the change in you!
-
@hekoka why is it then that sooooo many people in the world do physical fitness routines and so few do zen?
-
@atfatw only if it was as easy as you seem to think! zen is not about doing press up, yoga postures, stretching or breathing fresh air! you evidently know nothing of zen and conclude that it is useless! its ike saying "war and peace" is a piece of crap book but having never read it!!! Zen is a way of life, a philosophy a discipline and its apparent that you woud benefit from it too

pure legalism.... an archaic foreign practice of many past centuries serves no one today. substitute fresh air walking and calithetics and yoga and you will be undisturbable and thus happy due to your good state

trust me . . . those little whacks feel really good after days on the cushion.
-
Funny how people act like they couldn't use a good "wake up whack" of their own.

you get a hit if you pay extra

That may be the case in some traditions, but in this tradition and this recording, the stick was used as a tool to simply keep students awake. During meditation the student puts their hands together if they want to get wacked, as you can see, and then the teacher gives them a wack. And then they both bow. There was no unexpected wacking going on, unless you were obviously asleep then you might get a wake up wack.

Sometimes, however, you will get hit if you are caught napping or if your posture is slumping. It is not punishment, but a way to help stimulate the body and wake you up; a way to encourage you. In most zendos, if you never want to be hit, they will not hit you.
