  • My Dad was on the ammunition ship, S.S. Robert Rowan, shown in this newsreel, which was hit by Luftwaffe bombs and exploded. A few hours before that, it was hit by a artillery round fired from shore. The Luftwaffe also strafed the beaches. A number of American planes, carrying paratroopers, were also accidentally shot down at night by American anti-aircraft gunners. Further, the fighting around Gela was fierce. This newsreel seems to have been propaganda. Not very accurate.

  • my grand father was in the 5th army. can you tell if they were here

  • My grandfather was 2nd wave Gela Beach with the 4th Beach Battalion. This newsreel makes the landing seem like a cakewalk. My grandpa told me his sector was under fire including vehicles hitting land mines on the beach.

  • Can you tell me where you acquired this footage? I am inquiring on behalf of the documentary I am creating for PBS. Thanks. Is this public domain?
