Lani's point was that Juan's formula was far too limiting and would not address the larger issue of fairness and justice in this country. She said sure it would be fine if all underprivileged peoples could meet Juan's formula, but the real need was for those people who possessed the majority of the country's resources, who commanded the power to make true, immediate and focused positive change, to build relationships with the disadvantaged and make a real difference beyond his simple formula.

Juan did not tell people they have to get married. He pointed out the statistical fact that children born to single parents are more likely to fail in school and commit a crime. This is a fact whether Guinier likes it or not. One can be very successful without getting married. But if you want your children to be successful, they will have a much better chance if you establish a stable marriage before you have them.
