Collagen dressing is locally available in India for treatment of superficial, partial thickness burn injuries. It clings to the wound until a clean epithelialised area is present below, resulting in improved cosmetic results. It protects the wound from bacterial infection and reduces pain. Collagen may be used to cover areas covered by skin grafts, however where grafts are not available it may be applied directly to the excised wounds.
