@infantryofficer I don't think you realize that tony george wanted a oval track american driver series. He basically kicked the CART teams out of the league.
@infantryofficer um I would like to go back to the days when season was under cart and the Indy 500 was under USAC, because back then the series had full grandstands at every race, a full grid of sexy looking and sounding race cars, and a grid of great drivers. The split your talking about wasn't that bad to be honest. The split im talking about ruined open wheel racing in north america
@infantryofficer what are you talking about? Tony George and under one banner shouldn't even be used in the same sentence like that. He completely screwed open wheel racing in north america forever.
@THEkingjaymz yes that is what I am saying. Once everything has been paid, they would be lucky to break even, it may be their biggest race but over a whole season that one race wouldn't count for much as far as revenue goes.
@mytchook You're trying to tell me the Indy 500 doesn't bring in alot of money? 300,000 people (if you include those in the infield) doesn't do something for the series' revenue?
It went pear shape when Bobby Rahal stepped in as interim CEO. When they decided to list it on the stock exchange killed them. Naive american companies only wanted products advertised in the US, they didnt care about international audiances. That was the key to CART's success. It was global. I am afraid we are going to have to agree to disagree. Enjoy your 'racing'. Also with the looks of the new range of cars for th 2012 season, the future looks very, very bleak indeed for IRL
@infantryofficer F1 pawns IRL. CART was a rival to F1, I was refering to a global fan base, a truly unique series, turbocharged engines 900-1000HP during the end of th 90's, one week you could be on a super speedway, then the next you were on a street course in the wet, then the following week they were buzzing around an airport??? The fans were treated like fans during race weekends, nothing was out of reach, the drivers the teams and the cars.
Not a lot of passing places here, hopefully the new car is a little more exciting on the road courses
