Papa Dip -- Stumptown Jazz.
At a concert for the Portland's Jazz Society Stumptown plays a jazz classic composed by Lil Armstrong called Papa Dip. Since my early years I always was intrigued by the recordings of the New Orleans Wanderers, a band very similar to Louis Armstrong's Hot Five but less known and with only another cornet player called George Mitchell. I guess it was filmed for the first time with our Climax Jazz band in 1979 with special guest Turk Murphy. So it was quite a surprise to see it now from a recording from 2002 which I received on a video just a few days ago. Stumptown plays it rather uptempo with inspired solo work.
In the band are Bob Erwig trumpet, Phil Hatton clarinet, Rex Rice trombone, leader Gary Peterson piano, Dave Brown banjo, John Wallin tuba and Bill Franklin drums.
