The name comes from some things later on in the story. ...Plus, it's what the guy who makes it was diagnosed with, way back in the day.

Honestly Seriouse Emotional Disturbance is a term used torwards things it doesnt apply. Although by the IDEA's standards it does apply. Serious Emotional Disturbance is when there is some upsetting, change, or difference in your emotions(i.e. disturbance.) It can be used when someone is upset by something and becomes sad, angry, or even happy along with many other emotions that can occur. It although does not mean you are mentally unstabl because feeling any emotion is healthy.
