Bethlehem Steel was the second-largest steel company in the U.S. It produced steel beams used in the construction of skyscrapers and bridges. A decade after the company closed its doors, it's oldest plant is undergoing a major transformation. VOA's Susan Logue reports from Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.
The reasons why US steelmaking collapsed are sevenfold: 1) Horrible nearsightedness of the US industry - they were in the business for making short-term profits while the Europeans and Japanese were making steel. 2) Greed and maximizing the profits instead of new investments 3) Obsolete processes and mills 4) Refusal to innovate and adopt new technologies 5) Refusal to specialize in high-end products but producing bulk steel 6) Inflammated union-corporation relationships 7) Protectionsm.

The European and Japanese steelmakers, which drove the US steelmakers out of business, were and are even today far more unionized than the US corporations. The difference is that the unions and companies did not see each other in Europe and Japan as enemies, but complements.

Typical democrat's beloved unions.. strikes that cost the company BIG money (like the nation wide "1959 steel strike" I found on youtube that brought foreign steel to the country for the 1st time!), they got very luxurious benefits and pay most would dream of having today, 60's non-union scrap steel plants that don't pollute near as much as raw iron production competing for the same exact market, the late 70's brought the costly EPA. The decline started in youngstown in '77... yup..republicans..

Typical Republican..."We're gonna shut down these union jobs and have a bunch of burger flippers on this site!" Idiots like Ray-Gun and Bush did this.

Did you see that blowing engine room??? Cooper-Bessemer, probably built in the '30s or '40s. That millwas obsolete after WWII! Corporate greed at work, my friends...squeeze every last nickel out of an obsolete plant, then can all the career workers and abscond with the money. It's the American way!

so sad.....retail? casino? just what we need....another mall! its great working for less then $10/hr with no benefits. too bad america made it so damn difficult to run any heavy industry. you want these jobs back? try shouting down the enviro whackos and the unions with their outstretched hands saying "more more more" and there might be a chance.

@rog197236 Thankfully the steel industry has boosted a bit over the past few years.
