The national significance of the Murray-Darling River Basin cannot be underestimated. It is Australia's food bowl. It contains hundreds of places of great environmental significance, more than 40,000 years of indigenous cultural values and was instrumental in European settlement.
Yet in less than a century, water extraction from the Murray-Darling Basin has increased by 500%. In places along the Murray-Darling, wetlands -- which function as the kidneys of rivers -- and their wildlife are severely depleted. The economic prosperity and the long-term future of people living in the Basin depend on a healthy environment.
Right now a national plan for the Murray-Darling is being developed. We are stepping up our campaign to ensure that this Basin Plan is scientifically credible and returns enough water flows to the Murray-Darling.
