This is a demonstration of the Thai drum dance, the sword dance, and the butterfly dance.

Key highlights:
The drum dance just looks cool. Watch the guy kick, head butt, spin, and do lots of different ways to hit the drum. He hits the drum so hard it requires two people behind it to hold it in place, me being one of them.

The sword dance is neat. At one point in the video you will see about 10 swords in the guys mouth as he dances. His name is Paw Naan and he adopted me as his grandson. He is the leader and teacher of the group.

The last dance is the butterfly dance. Baifern said she started dancing about two years ago and still really likes it.

They each taught me the basics of all the dances - its a lot of fun!

  • There are only 2 styles of Thai dancing here. That's not the butterfly dance, it's a bird dance. Fawn Nok Tai-Yai, Tai-Yai are from Burma. I grew up around Lanna so I know the Fawn dab and Drum dance well.

  • This dance group is from Chiang Rai, which borders Burma. All dancers are Thai, but I suspected the leader speaks some Burmese. So I guess it was either adopted by the dancers, or its not just Burmese but shared by very close neighbors . . .

  • These dances from Thai Yai people in northern Thailand and northern Burma. The Thai Yai are related to the Thai. A lot of them live in Mae Hong Son, Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai and Lampang provinces in Thailand. They are not related to the Burmese. The dance here is Thai Yai Ram Nok (bird dance) not butterfly. The Ram Dab (sword dance) is also Thai Yai. My girlfriend is a Thai Yai (Shan) from Mae Hong Son and I've seen these dances in Mae Hong Son province. I think these dancers are Thai Yai.

  • Oh crap, better hide this video, some Lao and Khmer might find this video and say that it is thiers!!!!!! You know, the Thai stole it all from them!
