Kapil Dev won the world cup for India as captain in 1984. Whey wasn't he the captain in 1985? Because the Bombay(Mumbai) has always controlled Indian cricket and media. Sunil Gavaskar was such a negative, defensive captain. His record as captain was the worst of all.

And no surprise when Kapil was suddenly dumped as captain in 1988 and another mumbaikar Dalip Vangaskar was named the captain.

Only because of Kapil Dev's background as Punjabi, that he was never given long stint as captain.
