These are a group of Dictyostelium cells moving towards folic acid. The short clip is made of 180 images, each taken 10 seconds apart -- so this is not real time, but rather a time lapsed series of photographs of these cells.

  • Is this just brown's (=thermal) movement or are the cells actively moving around?

  • the cells are actively moving around - they sense the folic acid and move towards there. There is a batch with the Myosin II gene not functioning properly, which doesn't move towards the folic acid.

  • Very nice. Was this shot in Harvard's MCB54 lab? (I'm the lab tech behind the scenes for the course).

  • Yes, I am in Natalie's lab :)

  • @denizkural I would move towards folic acid if I sensed it.
