20th Fighter Wing F-111E's in action at RAF Upper Heyford. Having 16 years of my life associated with the 20thFW as a military dependent, I felt compelled to capture the F-111Es on video before they left the UK. All three squadrons were inactivated during 1993: 79thFS -- Apr 93, 77thFS -- Jul 93, 55thFS -- Oct 93. Last three F-111s left Heyford during Dec 93. Jan 94 -- 20thFW inactivated. Most of the F-111Es were sent AMARC better known as the Boneyard at Davis-Monthan AFB in Tucson, Arizona.

The following imagery was taken on December 21-23, 1992, while I was on leave from the AF. Quality isn't the best, but considering what I had to work with, it will have to do. Enjoy!

  • the takeoff at the end of the video was somewhat painful......no hearing protection. 20 years old, I figured I was indestructible. The ringing eventually went away.

  • Brilliant video. I moved to the area having gone to view a house for sale on the flightpath (Steeple Claydon). As I got out of my car the 111's were coming in to land. I brought that house immediately.

  • Excellent video, takes me way back....thanks for posting

  • forever UH

  • remember uh

  • 050 nice, that was my thunder lizard...

  • What an AWESOME video! We lived over there from 78 to 81 while my dad served at RAF Croughton. I fell in love with the F-111s at Heyford as soon as I first saw them! Such an impressive airplane....I could watch them take off and land for hours at a time! Can't believe Heyford closed in 94. Can't believe the Aardvarks are gone! Thanks for the memories!

  • AWSOME!!! I was at UH 77/78, POL. If you could just smell the jet fuel, couldn't get no better. Sad to see the F-111's gone as well as the base. A great time and great friends. Loved those night takeoffs. If you where there, don't just miss the sounds?
