Though Muslims by birth, they are closely linked since generations to both Muslim and Hindu families of their patrons called Jajmaans. During annual festivals and festivities related to rituals like engagements, marriages, births and even the sorrow of separation from beloved, these professional artists are called upon to sing and play in homes and temples, and aare remunerated for their services by their patrons in different ways.
