Barbara John highlights the difference between the crimes that were done in the name of Islam and believers in Islam. As there are more than 20 million people who belong to Islam in the European Union, it is a really big challenge for us to live peacefully together, - points out the member of the European Commission against Racism and Intolerance. Muslims in Europe have done a lot to adapt to the countries they live in, but we also need to accept cultural diversity. The legal basis for religious freedom needs to be applied to Muslim communities to the same extent as to the Christian ones. Teachers have an important role to play in addressing intolerance against Muslims, as trust building is crucial, and it starts at school and in the neighborhood.
The European Commission against Racism and Intolerance (ECRI) is a human rights body of the Council of Europe, composed of independent experts, which monitors problems of racism, discrimination on grounds of ethnic origin, citizenship, colour, religion and language, as well as xenophobia, antisemitism and intolerance, prepares reports and issues recommendations to member States.
