A Melbourne bound goods train with diesel electric locomotive G527 in charge, arrived at Mildura former passenger platform at about 5:50 PM on Thursday November 18th 1010. It departed at about 7:50 PM -- Mildura is in the state of Victoria Australia and in the north west corner. The site of the once extensive and busy railyards from which the rails have been pulled up, is on the right of the train as it leaves the platform.
The train in the video originates at Merbein about 10 kilometres on the down side of Mildura where there are container handling facilities. The tank containers seen on the train, are used to transport beer. Although all the yard tracks have been pulled up at Mildura, one siding to the turntable remains. This is at the end one of the tracks that ran through the sheds where the Vinelander carriages were serviced and stored. the other track into the carriage sheds has been removed. The turntable is styill in existence but the only room to store a special train is now on the siding to the turntable; and to reverse a train would apparently require two locomotives; the second to position the carriages while the main locomotive is being turned, so the main locomotive could be joined to the Melbourne end of the train.

  • @Porkonfork -- They obviously don't count passengers or trains, only potential votes for themselves. Potential passengers are surely far more numerous.

  • Agree that Mildura is a major centre, would love to know the numbers on travel from Mildura to Melbourne and return. Surely these would add up to a daily service also enhancing townships like Ouyen, Birchip, Donald & St Arnaud on its way to Maryborough and Melbourne.

The current government albeit warts and all has at least returned rail passenger servers to Ararat and now Maryborough (not sure when Clunes reopens)

    Still not enough though.

    Keep the pressure up @reidgck

    cheers

  • @Porkonfork -- Its surely a disgrace a the way the passenger train service was dumped in such a fashion considering Mildura is such an major centre. There is still agitation to revive a passenger service -- quite noticable at state election time at present. A couple of those vlocity trains running a day service each way would be better than no trains as at present.

  • I miss the Vine-lander @reidgck

As a 16 year old, l can remember with glee my first train ride on the Vinelander in first class, Mildura to Spencer st Melbourne. 30 years ago, the memories still fresh and wanting. thanks
