Before the causeway was built by the Japanese there was the ferry from Bairiki to Betio. I'm sure some of the older I-Kiribati would remember it.
The causeway cost a lot more than just money; Bikeman Island in the Tarawa lagoon was lost and a major decrease in fish and shellfish as the causeway blocked the entry of spawning fish. I wonder if the Japanese did an Environmental Impact Assessment before building?
But on the upside, it now takes 10 minutes to cross compared to the 40 to an hour ferry trip.
