@thorfoxxx You can pull out #1 plug, have someone turn ignition key till crank rotates. put finger over top of threads in hole, you will feel a "puff" on the compression stroke. then engine will be close to TDC. line the marks up on the crank pulley and timing cover mark. NOW remove sensor, put tool on and install. reinstall plug. The cam sensor is a Hall effect sensor and it has a vane, the sensor tells the PCM when to fire the injectors.
@osu67 i put mine in off, i have no idea how off. i used the tool but did not put it top dead center. is it harmful to my engine to keep driving it until i can take it to a shop? also what would you recommend me to do now, i still have the tool but am not confident in rotating the engine to top dead center as is shown in this video.
There are 2 different installation tools, one is for the 3.0L=30 degrees and one for the 4.0L=45 degrees, Normally the correct installation tool WILL come with the syncronizer assembly! If the CMP is installed incorrectly engine damage may result from improper fuel timing! 28 Year Master, L-1 Technician
what do you mean 30 degrees off the center i have a taurus and have the same problem i bought the syncronizer but just put it on however the the check engine light wont come off help plz
You do not have to set it to TDC. Just mark the position of the syncro in relation to the hall effect vane on the shaft, then pull it out. Even if the vane is sheared off, you can still tell where the vane once was. I'm a Ford Senior master tech and have put at least 30 of these things in taurus, Windstars, etc. By the way, I've seen many do it yourselfers put them in 180 out. All this does is let the PCM set fuel timing for proper combustion.
@thorfoxx The MIL light will come on when the injector pulse does not match the Crank sensor

Dont forget to dip the gear of the synchronizer in CLEAN motor oil to avoid gear failure.
