Dorrie Fontaine, Ph.D., R.N., FAAN ( Professor of Nursing and Dean at the University of Virginia School of Nursing) opened with a background on the Bice Memorial Lectureship and introduced Cynda Hylton Rushton, Ph.D., R.N., FAAN (Associate Professor, Schools of Nursing and Medicine and Berman Institute of Bioethics, Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, Maryland). Dr. Rushton described the characteristics and qualities of trust (including communication, competence, and contractual forms of trust), trustworthiness, and betrayal. She proposed: ways to create and increase a capacity for trust, actions to promote healing from experiences of betrayal and attitudes and actions to take when working in environments that are compromised by trust. She frequently referenced the work of Dennis and Michelle Reina, who wrote "Trust and Betrayal in the Workplace."
