Judge Belvin Perry lays down the law for the "laughing" DA Jeff Ashton, and over the top defense lawyer Jose Baez, warning that despite the overheated closing arguments, he will eject either one for violating courtroom decorum again.
When Baez objected to Ashton laughing at his closing statements as he strutted his stuff, a grinning expression that appeared to be outright giggling that mocked the portly Casey defender, the judge sent the jury out and chastised counsel. Ashton apologized, saying he was trying to hide his expression by hiding it behind his hand.
In an especially contrite tone, after duking it out with Ashton's team for three years in and out of court, Baez also apologized.
Judge Perry told them if it happened again, someone else would be doing their closing statements to the jury.
As it happened, both remained in the saddle, but Linda Burdick gave a windup punch widely hailed as brilliant for the prosecution as the judge read jury instructions and sent dispatched them to begin deliberations late Monday.
After five hours, no verdict.

  • Agree. Jury cannot ignore snickers by a professional DA...but her parents flip flops did it; they didn't know who to believe.'

  • That was bullshit. The judge never once admonished Ashton to knock it off and it was only when the defense attorney pointed it out and called him a laughing guy did the judge do anything. Terrible judge. Just terrible.

  • @jx14aby If you watched the beginning, you hear that the judge cannot see Ashton from where he is sitting.

  • I understand the seriousness of this trail However I even Laughed at the judge When he paused @ 2:13 and did the plucky ducky lips move in court, that was funny

  • This might have played a role.
