The knowledge planet is a 3D animation based on the information landscape metaphor [1]. It uses semantic similarity instead of geographic proximity [2] to extract key topics from 10,000 news media articles related to climate change published in 2010 [3]. The rendering is done with the NASA World Wind Java SDK [4]; developed in the research projects IDIOM [5] and RAVEN [6].
