(DPA) Hanoi - Four people were killed Wednesday and two seriously injured when fireworks intended for Hanoi's 1,000th anniversary celebrations exploded at the city stadium, a senior Fire Department official said.

Three shipping containers of Chinese fireworks exploded at 11:30 am (0430 GMT), said the official, who asked to remain anonymous.

It was not clear whether the victims were Vietnamese officials or the Chinese specialists who had been handling the fireworks. The bodies were burned beyond recognition, the official said.

'It took us half an hour to extinguish the blaze,' he said.

The explosion was initially reported on the websites of several Vietnamese newspapers. But within an hour, the stories had been pulled from all local websites.

Mobile phone videos posted on Vietnamese chat sites showed a large white smoke cloud spreading over the arena.

Hanoi is celebrating the 1,000th anniversary of its founding by King Ly Thai To in 1010. The celebrations are scheduled to conclude with the capital's largest-ever parade and fireworks display on the symbolic date of October 10, or 10/10/10.

On holidays from Australia, we went there to see the kite festival that day for the 1000th anniversary. Before the explosion the area was packed with people and most ran for their lives. The sound was deafening. The earth was shaking, it was terrifying!!
