LIFE, DEATH (TEARS, DREAM) - Orchid Ensemble

recorded live at the 2008 production of Ghost Project: Orchid Ensemble - Lan Tung (erhu), Gelina Jiang (zheng), Jonathan Bernard (percussion); media arts by Aleksandra Dulic and Kenneth Newby (Flicker Media); Madrigal Singers (Vancouver Community College) conducted by Jin Zhang, Gerald van Wyck choir director; music composed by Yawen Wang. In a set of four vignettes, based on the four short poems by Taiwanese contemporary poet Hsiung Hung, the piece completes itself as a song cycle - both musically and philosophically. This is the first two movements, performed continuously in cycles: life-death-life-death-life. The poetic ideas in the text inspired the musical structure and evocates Gamelan music. This piece was commissioned by the Egret Music Centre to perform with the Orchid Ensemble.

【鬼域】(Ghost Project) 由蘭韻中樂團的團長董籃，聯合藝術家亞麗桑卓‧杜麗、肯納斯‧紐比和瑟綷斯諾‧哈他納共同創作，和Roundhouse社區藝術中心共同舉辦，並由董籃製作。本著對生命結­束後靈魂的歸宿的好奇，他們彼此分享著台灣、東歐、加拿大、和印尼等不同文化的背景。經由對民間傳說與信仰的審視，並透過音樂、舞蹈、多媒體藝術和裝置藝術，藝術家們在萬­聖節的週末，將Roundhouse演藝中心的舞台，變身為ㄧ座鬼影幢幢的鬼屋。

這場演出結合了亞洲的審美觀與現代的映像科技，讓來自神秘世界的幽靈飄盪在舞台上。圍繞音樂家們的視覺動畫，運用古代神話和傳統民間藝術中鬼的形象，投影在迷濛的森林、中­國書法、和現代抽象畫的多層次背景上，營造出一種詭譎的景象。

蘭韻中樂團成立于1997年，二胡、箏、打擊樂的樂器組合，以古典與現代結合，曲目豐富多樣並不斷創新，跨越中國傳統及現代風格、包含結合西洋作曲法及東方藝術思維的原創­­樂曲，並嘗­­­試世界音樂、爵士樂及即興演奏。溫哥華The Georgia Straight 週報曾形容蘭韻中樂團是"世界音樂的百花中，綻放得最明麗的奇葩之一"。
