But there's actually a trick here. The diamons are not plain color. They have gradient color. If it was plain it woudn't work. Tested with PS

Good work, you're right :) That's the only reason this works. The white at the top helps to enhance the contrast and make the top row look darker. The rest is all due to gradients. Each diamond is exactly the same and obviously has the same gradient. Our brains are just REALLY fooled when we see them in this pattern and don't know about the gradient. Yes they do lighter on top and darker on the bottom in each diamond.
