I guess you people have never taken an art class? This is a cool illusion but it's one which artists must be aware of and make use of for accurate shading. The eye/brian causes us to judge the shade of something not just on what it looks like, but also by what shades are surrounding it. Net effect is if there is a large amount of contrast, our brain will impose an artificial gradient.
