Recorded October 26, 2011, 7pm. Slavoj Zizek --at a book signing event at St. Mark's Bookshop in the East Village--gives a lengthy talk using the Occupy Wall Street movement as an example that now is time for slow, careful "thinking", and not simply be trapped the movement's carnival-like atmosphere, or " hip pragmatism " (37:20); don't be mired in " leftist melancholy " (45:10)

the real 99%? the wall street protesters, or the starving poor in America and around the world? (34:00)

the true lost object in melancholy is this desire (5:59)

also... at the end of the talk he inquires into the status of st marks bookshop, in danger of closing due to high rent.

  • This is brilliant.

  • Udi Aloni - means Woody Allen

  • what? there is nothing unintelligible at 2:03 anymore than anywhere else in the audio (?)

  • My polemic against the political philosophy of Slavoj Zizek is essential reading for anyone concerned with how to break out of the framework of capitalism. Is there a relevant Marxist vision and strategy that speaks to the enormity of the problems humanity confronts and that yields liberatory solutions? In short, is a radically different, and better, world possible? The polemic is at Revolution newspaper, revcom.us

  • My guesses :)

40:41-> [...] spiritual substance of Jews is affected, is changing.

41:07 -> He is representative of something terrible for me that is working.

    Great video!

  • Re what he says 17:20. It seems obvious that the protests are not all united by 'discontent with capitalism'; the ones in the middle east are clearly primarily a response to tyrannical dictatorships. And make more sense seen in a context of those societies being in closer contact with western customs because of the rise of social media sites etc. This undermines his argument against capitalism somewhat, but he's obviously right about almost everything else he says.
