You are talking about the south indian drum called mrdanagam , but this course is dealing with the mrdanga from Bengal ( North India/Bangladesh ) , also called Khol .
It is an entirely different drum and technique .
The south indian Mrdangam is somehow related to the north indian drum " Pakhawaj " , whereas the bengali Mrdanga is more related to the drum called " Pung " from Manipur .

Where are the other five sound that you can get in a real mridangam drum in the right hand? There is a lot more in the leanguage of carnatic music where it came from!!
