I hate that word. "Retard!" To use such a word in a derogatory fashion is just cruel and also ignorant. Oh I would love to ban that hated word! Believe me, I would. Period.

You wanna know something? I, too hate that word! If I was at work, and if my boss yells at me and uses the word "retard" in front of my face, I would stop working and got to Human Resource and complain. Why? People with mental disabilities are in a protected class in my workplace. To utter such a word to anybody whatever if they have a disability or not, is not only mean and nasty, but ignorant. I wouldn't tolerate that. No way in hell!!

How about respect for all individuals? I do not like being made fun of nor do I like how this campaign focuses on mental retardation only. Everyone is subject to being made fun of for whatever reason, be it due to disability, being overweight, etc. I don't know anyone who likes being made fun of regardless.

monkey 6321, you say that you don't use the "r" word around people with mental disabilities, you say you even look before you say the "r" word, well how can you tell if someone you use the word around has a friend or family member that is mentally disabled?

Important video. Should have way more views.

i wouldnt ever say that word to a mentally dissabled person i cant even imagine what its like to be mentally dissabled so i just say if they can do it so can I!!

It doesn't degrade other people when I say it. I don't say it when someone with an intellectual disability is around and even look to see.
Exactly, because, it would OFFEND people, thts what the people are trying to stop the offense.

Don't you get it mokey6321? Your use is exactly what we want to change. It's not always just about the word, it's what is behind the word. Your view of people with intellectual disabilities as less than equal human beings, which prompts you to use a derogatory slang in reference to them as a joke or insult IS the problem. If you respected ALL people you'd use another word.
