Time to Talk talks to Ruth Crouch about her son Declan, who took his own life in 2011.

A public memorial service was held in Cairns in far north Queensland this afternoon for teenager Declan Crouch.

Declan's uncle Brian Crouch said the family were framing the event as a "positive day".

"Because it has brought all the people of Cairns together. Look at it more as a celebration of Declan's life."

A private funeral was held for the teenager earlier this morning.

The 13-year-old's disappearance in March sparked a massive police search.

The boy's remains were found in swampland 300 metres from his home at Machans Beach.

Police say his death was not suspicious.

  • Thanks for raising awareness to prevent suicide among youth. I wasn't aware his death is suicide until this vid. And what's with all the lag since your last update?

  • @st515041 Thanks for the message. We had a bit of a break with Time to Talk but we're back now. Let's hope Ruth's courage in talking to us will get at least a few people re-thinking how we look at suicide in Australia.
