After watching this movie a billion times, I've come to the conclusion that he was at least interested in Claire during the beginning. I'm assuming that he truly started to like her when she corrected his way of saying the name of the author of the book he was ripping up. That look told all...

Then when he was watching her while andy and allison were getting drinks. Plus when he looked at her before distracting Vernon. I'd guess he liked her all along.
