Messiaen, in his relation to bird-song, retains that delight and wonder that a child might feel at the simple wonders of nature, and passes it on to us, his audience. I think it's one of the greatest things an artist can do.

Leave the old guy alone he's just enjoying God's creation God bless him. How sad you can't share in his joy

Awwwwh, what's the matter, can't handle a little bit of dissonance?
You know, the fact that his music doesn't tickle your fancy doesn't make him a 'horrible composer'. The fact that you think so, though, speaks to your incredible arrogance, and musical ignorance. It's nice that you can't listen to anything that's not decidedly tonal, but others are not so restricted. Please grow up.

Petezilla, mankind does not have a monopoly on meaning. We are simply socialised into believing we are alone in the making of it. You will only prove to yourself that there is meaning in anything, including birdsong, by experiencing it directly. To accomplish that awareness, you need to trust that you can live without your addiction to your own intelect, and that can take a long time. Thankfully, there are people like Messiaen to suggest the way forward.

Messiaen made some of the most beautiful music of the 20th century, it's really nice being able to see him walking around the woods talking about birds, thanks for sharing this!

@Opiate1987 by what I just wrote I mean that your statements with in the framework of this argument are ridiculous.
-
@Opiate1987 Soothing? Completely subjective. Seriously, this argument is a joke

@Opiate1987 Well if they aren't making music with anything in mind, then there isn't a lot of difference between them and those poor stupid birds: math rock imitating math rock, birds imitating other birds....
He was not trying to reason with them, he was transcribing their songs and putting it into a musical context, it's really a simple concept. He was not unprecedented in imitating birds or nature, especially as a French composer.
The video ends at the best part.
